The owner of a newly-launched health and safety consultancy firm has loaned his services free of charge to a charity based in the East Yorkshire market town where he grew up.
Matt Smith, who is based near Selby, established Safe Workforce Solutions earlier in the summer and one of his first jobs was to carry out a free fire safety audit at the Shire Hall in nearby Howden, which is a busy and popular community venue.
Having served as a watch manager for Humberside Fire and Rescue for 15 years and, more recently, spending two years as Howdens Joinery Supply Division’s lead technical and safety trainer, Matt has a wealth of experience in fire safety and first aid, and in providing health and safety solutions and advice to both private and public sector organisations.
During his time in the fire service, Matt was responsible for two fire stations; one was a public sector station serving the community and the other was a private sector station based at a large scale manufacturing facility where COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) regulations were in place. In his role at Howdens Joinery, he was responsible for delivering and developing bespoke health and safety training solutions for more than 1,500 employees.
Matt said: “Safe Workforce Solutions is about helping business owners and their employees to understand the requirements of Health and Safety and Fire Safety legislation, and how to implement them in their own differing work environments. Since the business was launched in April, I’ve been working with businesses, large and small, across the UK to help them create a safer workplace.
The Shire Hall in Howden is a charity that’s very close to my heart and it was great to be able to give something back to the community where I grew up by offering my services free of charge.”
